Amy Tarr, WOW. She was absolutely INCREDIBLE. Definitely my favorite speaker we’ve ever had. She brought an entirely new energy to the room that could practically lift me out of my seat. I couldn’t stop taking notes. Not only was her story interesting, but inspiring as well. You can definitely tell that all of her experiences have taught her many valuable lessons. I also loved seeing how passionate she was about the program. It’s always incredible to be reminded that there are so many people that have such high hopes for us as entrepreneurs.

We began the week with a team building exercise that focused on our teamwork and communication skills. I feel that with our various leadership and brainstorming capabilities, we work very well as a team. Between the 10 of us, we seem to have a very proportional variety of traits that allow us to complete any task efficiently.

The class started off the week with a breakfast with the program’s counselors. We used this opportunity to answer questions and provide insight on the program from a student perspective. As a team building activity we participated in a scavenger hunt. Through this, we discovered the importance of working with your opponent and the success that can come out of doing so. We also realized how beneficial it can be to thoroughly follow instructions when taking on a new task.

The folllwing day we heard from Paul Short from SCORE. This was very relatable to the things we have been discussing in class lately. Paul serves as a business mentor, assisting those looking for guidance when dealing with financial arrangements. His advice and handouts were very helpful as he discussed with us the proper ways to go about forming a business plan. We realized later than acceptable, that we should have had a thoroughly constructed business plan at the very beginning of our lanyard business.

On Thursday we visited Heritage Packaging. This tour consisted of us speaking to Greg Basford, as well as being taken on a tour of the factory. I've never seen the inside of a real factory before, and I found it very fascinating. I also thought it was amazing that Greg completely understood the ways all of the machines worked, even though he's the one wearing the business suit.

Todd Mourning spoke to us about the importance of budgeting and planning out your finances. He showed us examples of a business plan formulated by a former student. He explained the benefits that come with calculating your expenses, and the errors that could occur if you fail to do so. This was highly beneficial to us as we have never been showed a proper format or process of starting a business plan.
